WASHINGTON, D.C., May 18, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Rep. Jason Chaffetz is expected to announce Tuesday that he will leave office before the end of his term, according to Politico, which attributes its information to three sources it says are familiar with the Utah Republican’s plans.
The sources say that Chaffetz, who represents Utah’s Third District, plans to leave Congress on June 30, according to Politico.
Chaffetz, 50, is chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. He made headlines earlier this week when he tweeted that he would subpoena memos from fired FBI director James Comey. That happened after allegations surfaced that Pres. Donald Trump had tried to interfere with an investigation involving Trump associates and top Russian officials.
Chaffetz has invited Comey to to testify next week before his panel.
According to Politico, Chaffetz told its reporters last month that he had begun exploring employment outside Congress. Politico reported that Chaffetz has told his colleagues he will appear on Fox News.
Chaffetz announced last month that he will not seek re-election in 2018. He was elected for his first term in 2008.
