WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Jan. 27, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) —Â Two arrests have been made after a shooting at Valley Fair Mall left a 14-year-old girl in critical condition almost a week ago.
One adult, 18-year-old Andy Minh Vuong, has been charged with one count of first-degree felony discharge of a firearm, one count of second-degree felony aggravated assault and one count of third degree felony theft by receiving stolen property. A juvenile has also been taken into custody.
The probable cause statement issued by police Friday said an altercation took place between two groups of people at Valley Fair Mall at 3601 S. Constitution Blvd. “A female victim was struck in the back which resulted in serious bodily injury,” the probable cause statement said. It was not immediately clear from the probable cause statement which of the suspects, Vuong or the juvenile, fired the shot or shots that struck the victim.
West Valley City Police Lt. Robert Hamilton said Sunday the 911 call came in at approximately 7:18 p.m., reporting a shooting at the mall. Officers who were already patrolling the mall area located the 14-year-old girl who had at least one gunshot wound.
The teen victim was at the mall with friends, Hamilton said, and received a phone call asking them to meet in a certain part of the parking lot.
“When they got there, some sort of altercation occurred, they fled and ultimately she was shot,” Hamilton said.
Hamilton said the shooting is believed to be gang-related.
He indicated that shell casings were found in one area, and the victim managed to run some distance to the place where police found her.
