Breaking: 2 males arrested in case of girl found injured in Cache County canal bed

CACHE COUNTY, Utah, Feb. 18, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Two males are in custody in connection with the case of a 14-year-old girl from Amalga who was missing and was later found at about 12:45 a.m. Feb. 17 in a dry canal bed in Smithfield.

According to a news release from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, “details of the discovery matched those of an active case by the Cache County Sheriff’s Office from earlier that night.”

The girl was transported to a Logan area hospital and then was flown to a Salt Lake City hospital for treatment of “a very significant injury.” Police are not releasing any details about the girl’s condition or the nature of her injury, as the case is still under investigation.

The release states that investigators began processing and gathering evidence at the place where the girl was found. They also interviewed several people who know the girl.

“The investigation eventually narrowed its focus on two male persons of interest, which were both detained and subsequently interviewed. Information obtained through the course of this focus revealed that both were involved in the outcome of this case,” states the release.

Authorities are not releasing any names or details of the arrests, as the investigation is ongoing.

A press conference is planned for Tuesday, and no further information will be released until then.

Agencies that have been working together on the investigation are the Smithfield City Police Department, Cache County Sheriff’s Office, Logan City Police Department, North Park Police Department and other State of Utah agencies.
