SALT LAKE CITY, Nov. 26, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Police responding to a “shots fired” call late Saturday night found themselves dealing with a homicide that apparently had just occurred.

Salt Lake City Police Lt. Gary Trost said officers arrived at 1329 N. Redwood Road to find a “deceased male under suspicious circumstances,” but said it was too soon to say whether the man’s death was definitely connected to the “shots fired” call.

Sunday morning, SLCPD updated that Leroy Daniel Valdez, 34, was locked outside of his apartment, and decided to break in. Upon entering, Valdez was confronted by Kenonren Goodman, 33. At least one shot was fired, police said, resulting in the death of Goodman.

“We don’t know exactly what transpired inside,” Trost told Gephardt Daily. “We’re talking to people but don’t have any witnesses who actually saw what happened inside, so we’re trying to piece that together.”

Police said it’s unclear at this point what the relationship was between the two and why Goodman was inside the apartment.

Detectives have been briefed on the situation and will now do a “really methodical investigation, gathering evidence around the scene.”

He said police had only spoken briefly with people in the area, and those people will now be questioned further on what they heard and saw that may relate to the man’s death. The victim was found in the downstairs apartment of the duplex, Trost said, so for now detectives are hoping the people upstairs may be able to provide information that will help with the investigation.

Valdez has been booked into to the Salt Lake County Jail on charges of homicide and possession of methamphetamine.
