PROVO, Utah, April 22, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A man who police said died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds after a SWAT standoff in Provo on Saturday night has been identified by officials.

The deceased is Michael Skinner, 48, Provo Police Department said in a news release Sunday.

Provo Police Chief Richard Ferguson told Gephardt Daily at the scene that officers were called to a home in the vicinity of 500 N. 1430 West at about 10:15 p.m. on reports of an argument between a father and son.

While police were on the way to the home they received word of “shots fired.”

When officers arrived, they found a 48-year-old woman and her 22-year-old son taking cover behind a truck, a subsequent news release said. Officers were able to carry the woman, who reportedly had three gunshot wounds from a 9 mm handgun, to safety, and the woman was transported to the hospital.

The woman underwent surgery and is expected to survive at this time. The 22-year-old son was not injured.

Provo Police found that the shooter was the woman’s husband, identified as Skinner, and that he was still inside the residence, the news release said.

Metro SWAT teams responded and made efforts to call out Skinner from the residence. After several attempts with no response, SWAT breached the home and sent in a K-9 unit. SWAT found Skinner deceased in a second-story bedroom just before 4:40 a.m. Police said it appears he died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Provo detectives are still investigating, but said it appears that there was a physical altercation between Skinner and his son.

Skinner’s son and wife left the house but the wife went back into the house to get shoes and saw Skinner with a handgun. The wife left the home and was shot three times in the driveway.

Police said a total of 10 shots were fired.

Gephardt Daily will update the story as more information becomes available.
