“Cake”

MPAA Rating: R

Running Time: 98 minutes

Toscano’s Take:

A woman becomes fascinated by the suicide of a woman in her chronic pain support group and develops a poignant relationship with the dead woman’s husband as she grapples with her own very raw personal tragedy.

Every so often a performance makes you realize there are actors who have a talent you’re not even aware of. I pick out performances like Halle Berry in “Monster’s Ball” and Charlize Theron in “Monster,” and I’m adding Jennifer Aniston to that list. Aniston proves her acting chops by delivering a powerful, raw and unsettling performance.
