Oct. 9 (UPI) — Jerry Seinfeld said he can no longer enjoy listening to Bill Cosby‘s comedy performances due to the many rape and sexual abuse allegations against the comedian.
Speaking at an event at the New York Society for Ethical Culture on Friday night, Seinfeld elaborated on comments he made during an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” last month, in which the two briefly discussed Cosby, a comedian they both greatly admired growing up. Colbert said he couldn’t listen to Cosby anymore, while Seinfeld said he could.
“I kind of thought that I would separate comedy from life, because so many comedians have horrible lives, and they’re oftentimes people you don’t admire, or they’re not likable,” Seinfeld said, according to Variety. “And I didn’t want that to ruin my appreciation of their comedy. But I had to admit, as [Stephen Colbert and I] discussed it, the more I thought about it, I couldn’t listen to [Cosby’s work] and enjoy it in the same way that I did before, and I was not able to separate it. So the wall kind of caved in.”
According to Deadline, he added: “But so many comedians had horrible lives you don’t admire. If you knew everything about everyone, you wouldn’t like anyone.”
