LOS ANGELES, Nov. 22 (UPI) — Nicole Kidman says she was starstruck when she met Tom Cruise for the first time.

The 49-year-old Australian actress admitted on The Jess Cagle Interview that she was “so nervous” to meet Cruise, her now ex-husband, during her audition for their 1990 movie “Days of Thunder.”

“I remember walking in, I remember being so nervous and seeing Tom Cruise drive up in a Porsche, I think it was,” Kidman recalled. “He got out of the car and walked through and I was like, ‘Ah.’ My jaw dropped.”

“Then I had to go in and audition in front of [director] Tony Scott … [producers] Don Simpson, Jerry Bruckheimer, Robert Towne and Tom. I was like, ‘No way, I’m not going to get this.’ They called that afternoon and I had the job,” she revealed.

Kidman and Cruise married in 1990, and adopted two children, daughter Isabella and son Connor, before their divorce in 2001. The actress, who was 23 when she and Cruise wed, reflected on their marriage in the November issue of “Red.”

“I was so young when I got married. I look back now and I’m like, ‘What?'” she admitted. “You look at Taylor Swift, I mean how old is she? She’s 26. I had two kids by the time I was 27 and I’d been married for four years. But that’s what I wanted.”

Kidman has since married country star Keith Urban, and shares two daughters, Faith and Sunday, with the Australian singer. She discussed supporting Urban’s sobriety with Cagle, saying she learned his recovery was out of her control.

“There is absolutely help out there. You can’t save somebody, they’ve got to save themselves,” the star said.

“As much as you think, ‘I can do all the work for him. I can make him better. I can take it away. I can help, I can help, I can help,’ at some point you just have to say, ‘I love you, and I’m here when you decide to do the work,'” she added.
