LOS ANGELES, Nov. 18 (UPI) — The origins of the Rebel Alliance are explored in a new featurette for Disney’s upcoming “Star Wars” spinoff film, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”

The clip released Thursday, features director Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones (Jyn Erso) and Diego Luna (Cassian Andor) as they go behind-the-scenes and explain how the film fits into the larger “Star Wars” saga.

“‘Rogue One’ takes place very close to ‘Episode IV.’ The simplest way to explain it is that text you see at the beginning of ‘A New Hope,’ that is essentially our movie,” notes Edwards in reference to the original ‘Star Wars’ taking place after a group of Rebel spies had stolen the plans to the planet-destroying Death Star.

“All these characters are real heroes that are willing to risk everything,” notes Luna about the ragtag team that his character and Jones’ put together in order to find a way to defeat the Death Star.

“Through their journey we see the formation of the Rebel Alliance the stealing of the Death Star plans,” adds Edwards.

Also starring Forrest Whitaker, Ben Mendelsohn, Jiang Wen, Donnie Yen, Alan Tudyk and Riz Ahmed, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” arrives in theaters Dec. 16, 2016.
