In theaters this week, a film that examines Dr Martin Luther King’s historic civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965 to secure equal voting rights.

The film is a poignant and well-acted historical drama well worth your time and effort to see. It gets 3 plays and is rated PG-13.

“Selma” is a 2014 historical drama film directed by Ava DuVernay and written by Paul Webb. It is based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches led by James Bevel, Hosea Williams and Martin Luther King Jr. of SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference) and John Lewis of SNCC  (Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee).

“Selma” premiered at the American Film Institute Festival on November 11, 2014 and had a limited release in the U.S. over the 2014 Christmas holiday weekend. It is slated for a wide theatrical release on January 9, 2015. “Selma” has garnered four Golden Globe Award nominations including Best Motion Picture- Drama and Best Director.

Also in theaters this week is Paul Thomas Anderson’s “InherentVice” in which Los Angeles detective Larry “Doc” Sportello, played by Joaquin Phoenix, investigates the disappearance of a former girlfriend.

“Inherent Vice” is a off-beat comedy that delivers some good laughs. I liked the film because of Anderson’s laid-back style. It gets 3 plays and is rated R.

“Inherent Vice” is a 2014 crime comedy-drama film directed and adapted for screen by Paul Thomas Anderson, based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Pynchon. It tells the story of private investigator Larry “Doc” Sportello investigating the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend. The film stars. It is the first feature film adapted from a work by Pynchon.

The film premiered at the 2014 New York Film Festival and was released theatrically in the United States on December 12, 2014.
