NEW YORK, March 30 (UPI) — The Daily Show has selected 31-year-old comedian Trevor Noah to replace Jon Stewart as the host of the popular broadcast news satire.

Noah has appeared on the show as a special contributor only three times, but was given the top spot Monday. He tweeted the news, saying he could not replace Stewart but will work to make it the best show it can be.

Stewart announced his impending departure in February, after a successful 16 years behind the desk.

“I’m thrilled for the show and for Trevor,” he said in a statement. “He’s a tremendous comic and talent that we’ve loved working with.”

Stewart added he may appear on the show as a correspondent.

Noah was born in 1984 under the laws of apartheid to a black South African mother and a white Swiss father — an illegal relationship at the time.

Since he came to the United States, he has done comedy routines on being black and race relations.

“I never thought I’d be more afraid of police in America than in South Africa,” he said on The Daily Show regarding the events in Ferguson, Mo. “It kind of makes me a little nostalgic for the old days, back home.”
