NEW YORK, Nov. 29 (UPI) — President-elect Donald Trump will tap former banker and Hollywood film producer Steven Mnuchin as his secretary of the treasury, sources close to the transition team said Tuesday.
Trump has filled several Cabinet posts but most remain unoccupied. Sources told news media on Tuesday that Mnuchin’s appointment might happen as soon as Wednesday.
Mnuchin, 53, worked for nearly 20 years at finance house Goldman Sachs before leaving the banking industry and moving west to enter a new career as a film financier. He went on to found RatPac-Dune Entertainment and produce big-budget films like “Avatar” (2009) and the “X-Men” film franchise.
If true, Mnuchin’s appointment to replace Jack Lew as Treasury chief will leave 12 more Cabinet slots remaining.
Five posts have been filled — Mike Pence (Vice President), Jeff Sessions (Attorney General), Betsy DeVos (Education), Tom Price (Health and Human Services) and Elaine Chao (Transportation).
Though Mnuchin has years of finance experience, he has no government experience. He served as the Trump campaign’s finance chair for the last six months.
Other prospective candidates for the treasury post are reportedly JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, Texas Rep. Jeb Hensarling, and former Federal Reserve governor Kevin Warsh.
