The time, effort and expense can add up pretty quickly. So Forbes magazine offered advice on which projects are worth the investment, and low-cost options when the numbers don’t quite add up.

Landscaping
Before you spend $2,000 or more on landscaping, consider the difference that just mowing, edging, pruning and cleaning might make. Add inexpensive flowers for color, and your yard will be transformed.
Repaving the driveway
Think about whether a coat of sealant would fix the problem. Concrete is expensive.
Repainting the walls
First, consider if you want to put in all the required effort. Second, paint only if you are sure it is worth it to you.
Replacing the carpet
Consider self-adhesive carpet squares, which can cost $40 for boxes of 10 to 16 squares.
Redoing the deck
Don’t replace your deck unless you can afford quality materials that will last.
Replacing the siding
Rather than installing all new siding, replace cracked and broken siding, then repaint.
