1 dead, 1 flown to hospital after crash in Vernal

VERNAL, Utah, Jan. 9, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — One person was killed and another hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash in Vernal Monday evening.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m., at 895 W. Highway 40, when an eastbound vehicle crossed into the westbound lane and collided with another vehicle, the Vernal Police Department said in a news release.

Both vehicles contained a driver and one passenger, the news release said. The driver of the eastbound vehicle was deceased at the scene and the passenger in that vehicle was transported to Ashley Regional Medical Center where he was treated and transported by air to a Salt Lake area hospital.

Both occupants of the westbound vehicle received minor injuries.

Officials have not released details of the circumstances leading up to the accident, or whether there were any contributing factors such as fatigue, or excess speed.

The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of family members.

Both directions of U.S. 40 were temporarily closed in the area, Utah Department of Transportation said on Twitter.
