BALLARD, Utah, Dec. 11, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A 2-year-old girl died Sunday after she was accidentally shot inside her home in Ballard in Uintah County.

Uintah County Sheriff deputies responded to the Uintah Basin Medical Center on the report of a child that had been shot, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release on Facebook.

Investigators learned that the child was in her home when she was accidentally shot while an older sibling was moving a gun.

“According to investigators, the gun had been brought inside the home following a hunting trip the day before and was leaning against a wall,” the news release said. “The victim and other siblings were cleaning up their toys when one of the older siblings went to move the gun from inside the house to another location. In the process of moving the gun, it discharged, fatally wounding the 2-year-old girl.”

The victim was transported by her parents to an area hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. The child has not been identified by officials.

“Our thoughts and prayers will be with the family of the victim as they go through this tragedy,” the news release concluded.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is released.
