20 to 30 Sandy homes evacuated due to overnight gas leak

SANDY, Utah, Nov. 23, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Thanksgiving got off to a rocky start for dozens of Sandy residents who were forced from their homes overnight after dangerous levels of natural gas were detected in sewer lines near 9850 S. Double Down Court.

The incident was first reported about 10:45 p.m. prompting the evacuation of between 20 and 30 homes.

Repair teams from Dominion Gas (formerly Questar) arrived on scene and began emergency repairs using jack hammers and back hoes to try and stem the leak.

Sandy Police officers cordoned off the area closing the street to traffic while crews from the Sandy Fire Department helped with evacuations.

As of 3:30 a.m. a number of residents were still not allowed back in their homes.

The all-clear was given a few hours later with all those displaced thankful to be back in their homes.
