TAYLORSVILLE, Utah, Feb. 17, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Fire crews were dispatched to a duplex on 5000 South after a fire broke out in one of the units at about 10:30 p.m. Friday.

Steve Prokopis, battalion chief for Unified Fire Authority, told Gephardt Daily crews responded to 1802 W. 5000 South and found that the duplex’s front unit had a fire in the kitchen.

He said crews had it knocked down within five minutes, but the damage was significant.

“Four adults, unfortunately, will be displaced,” Prokopis said. “The occupants of the rear unit should be allowed back in tonight.”

He said there was no structural damage, but smoke had spread throughout the front unit.

The flames involved the stove, cabinets and ceiling behind the stove, but did not extend into the attic.

“The occupant said he left grease warming unattended,” Prokopis said. “So we had a grease fire that spread to the cabinets.”

The occupants of both units were already outside when firefighters arrived, and there were no injuries.

Prokopis said the American Red Cross was on the way to assist the displaced residents.

He estimated the damage at “probably $10,000 to $15,000.”
