500 gallons nitric acid spills in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 25, 2017  (Gephardt Daily) — Firefighters responded Monday morning after 500 gallons of nitric acid was spilled by a chemical plant at 650 West and 800 South.

The acid spilled at Univar, a chemical distribution company, was contained by 10 a.m.

Drivers originally had been asked to avoid the area of 650 W. 800 South, but the area has since reopened.

No one was hurt in the incident, according to a tweet from the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

The Salt Lake Health Department tweeted that there is “no known threat to the public.”

According to The Essential Chemical Industry Online, nitric acid is most commonly used in the production of fertilizers, although a relatively small amount is used to make explosives.
