BIG, LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON, Utah, Feb. 19, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons have reopened Monday after closures while crews worked to clear snow accumulation.

Both Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons closed at 10:45 a.m., according to tweets from UPD Canyon Alerts, but Little Cottonwood reopened an hour later, and Big Cottonwood at noon.

A tweet at 11:20 a.m. said. “There have been lots of slide offs, including a UTA bus in Little Cottonwood Canyon. With the congestion, it is difficult to get plows to the trouble spots.”

Little Cottonwood Canyon also closed from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. for avalanche control, but reopened after that. Both canyons then had intermittent stoppages of traffic to fix slide offs and get the plows up the canyon.

“Thank you all for your patience and courtesy as we are trying to safely get everyone to where they need to go in the canyons,” a follow-up tweet said.

Salt Lake and the northern valleys are expected to see four to eight inches of snow total, with the benches receiving six to 12 inches and the mountains one to two feet, according to the Weather Channel, and a winter storm warning was in place until noon.

There will be more snow showers tomorrow morning along the Wasatch Front also.

Gephardt Daily will update this developing story as information becomes available.
