Baby revived after near-drowning in Box Elder canal

BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah, June 1, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A 1-year-old child was flown to Primary Children’s Hospital Wednesday night after a near-drowning in Box Elder County.

A mother was out for a walk with her four children, whose ages range from 1 to 11, and their family dog, according to a news release from Box Elder County Sheriff’s Department. The incident occurred in Bothwell, which is just west of Tremonton.

The baby was in a stroller and the other three children were on bicycles, the news release said.

The mother came to an intersection and asked the older children to stop their bicycles, but the 5-year-old did not. The mother let go of the stroller to stop the 5-year-old and the stroller began to roll and went into the canal next to the road.

The baby came out of the stroller and went through a culvert under the road.

The mother was able to rescue the baby from the water, and a passerby with medical training stopped to assist. The baby was given CPR and revived, then was transported to Bear River Valley Hospital. The baby was then flown to Primary Children’s Hospital as a precaution, but is expected to make a full recovery.

The investigation into the incident is continuing. Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.

  1. Way to go Mom!. Four children can be a handful but she saved her baby and none of her other children were hurt. I can only imagined her sheer terror seeing that stroller heading for the canal. Good for you for staying calm enough to save your baby!!
