BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah, June 7, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A sheriff’s deputy has severe facial injuries after his police truck was hit by an 18-year-old driver in Box Elder County.

The deputy, 30-year-old Zachary Moore, who was wearing his seatbelt, was airlifted in serious condition to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, according to a news release from the Utah Highway Patrol. His injuries are non life-threatening.

The incident occurred at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday when a white Toyota pickup was traveling eastbound on State Route 30 in Box Elder County, in the Beaver Dam area, near mile marker 97.

“The 18-year-old male driver came upon traffic that was stopped for a farm vehicle, waiting to turn left,” the news release said. “The driver applied his brakes and veered to the left to avoid hitting the stopped vehicles, veering into oncoming traffic.”

The Toyota pickup made contact with the driver-side  front corner of an unmarked Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office police truck.

“The impact caused the police truck to flip onto the passenger side, crushing the cab portion into the guardrail,” the news release continued.

The UHP is conducting the investigation and will screen the case with the Box Elder County Attorney for any charges.
