SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – October 17, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – Cameron Crimefighter told the Salt Lake Tribune Saturday a wrapped package with an unloaded assault rifle in it he left in the Utah Capitol Rotunda on Thursday, was a “symbol of peace.”

Utah Highway Patrol investigators originally told the media that Crimefighter – his real name – informed them the package was a protest against gun violence. On Saturday, Crimefighter told Salt Lake Tribune reporter Jessica Miller that, “It was meant to be a gesture.”

In addition to the unloaded rifle, Crimefighter claims there were pictures drawn by his own children and a letter with a list of the names of recent victims of mass shootings inside the package. The 31-year-old resident of Logan also told Miller that the rifle left in a coffin shaped package had all its functioning parts removed.

Crimefighter called the Tribune in Miller’s words, “to clarify that the gun placed in the Rotunda was not operable and that his actions were not a protest.” He also emphasized that the wreath on top of the package was made of olive branches to signify it was a peace symbol.

Surveillance video from the capitol released on Friday shows Crimefighter walking into the rotunda, dropping to his knees, laying the package down, pausing and then leaving through the same doors he entered through.

Police were monitoring the surveillance cameras and UHP troopers responded to the capitol and evacuated it in less than a minute.

UHP investigators travelled to Logan on Thursday night to interview Crimefighter but did not arrest him. In fact, Crimefighter, who was born Cameron Crebar in Oregon, has no criminal record in Utah.
