UPDATE: Crews Battling SLC House Fire, Elderly Woman Rescued By Neighbors

Salt Lake City Firefighters are battling a blaze at a home near Sugarhouse Park Saturday afternoon.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 19, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — An elderly woman was rescued by her neighbors Saturday afternoon after a fire broke out in her Salt Lake City home.

Salt Lake City Fire Department spokesman Jasen Asay said fire crews were first called to 1726 E. Yale Ave. at about 4:30 p.m. after thick smoke was seen pouring from the roof.

“There was heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof when we arrived,” Asay said.

“It took an hour to gain control of the fire due to the structure of the home. The second floor of the home had a large hole in the flooring, making it also difficult for crews to battle the fire from the inside.”

Asay said the homeowner was on the second floor when the fire started, and officials believe another person was in the basement, but that has not been confirmed.

Neighbors were able to rescue the woman, along with all three of her cats.

Two of the firefighters sustained minor injuries. One hurt his knee and the other suffered smoke inhalation. Neither was transported to the hospital.

The fire’s cause has not yet been determined.

Gephardt Daily has a crew on scene and will update the story as soon as information becomes available.
