MAGNA, Utah, Jan. 16, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Two people were injured in a shooting Tuesday morning in Magna.

The victims, a 17-year-old male and a 56-year-old man, were struck outside the State Liquor Store at 7250 West and 3500 South just after 10 a.m.

Unified Police Department Detective Chuck Malm told Gephardt Daily one victim was struck in the neck and one in the stomach.

Malm said the adult was a bystander who was shot by accident, and is possibly a state worker who was in the area to collect trash. Both victims were initially in critical condition, but were later upgraded to fair condition.

“From what we are gathering, there was a 17-year-old male that was having a verbal confrontation with a vehicle that had pulled up,” Malm said. “There was a conversation that was going on, the vehicle had left and approximately five or 10 minutes later the vehicle comes back and [an occupant] opens fire, striking the young man.”

The suspect vehicle is a small Nissan with a hatchback, possibly a small SUV, police said in a later update.

Malm said there may have been multiple suspects in the vehicle, which was last seen travelling westbound on 3500 South and made a northbound turn onto Patrick Drive, which is 7320 West.

It appears the juvenile and the suspects may have known each other, he added.

“We’re still interviewing witnesses, and we’ve got investigators on scene trying to put together the pieces of this puzzle,” Malm said.

Granite School District posted on Facebook that Lake Ridge Elementary, Copper Hills Elementary, and Matheson Jr. High were placed on a shelter-in-place protocol, which has since been lifted.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information on it is asked to call the UPD at 801-743-7000.

Gephardt Daily will update this developing story as information becomes available.
