CEDAR CITY, UTAH – August 12, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – Cedar City Police said an adult female called 911 and stated that a family member was in her home and was shooting at her, in the presence of three juveniles, Monday at around noon.

Officers from the Police Department were summoned to the 300 South block of 400 East in Cedar City. Officers arrived on scene and called out to the 36-year-old suspect, Brett Hunter. Hunter exited the residence and complied with officers. He was taken into custody without incident.

During the course of the investigation, it was determined that Hunter and the female victim are siblings and both reside in the home. Also in the home were three female juveniles.

The police department said in a statement: “Hunter allegedly became angry with his sister and retrieved a handgun. The female victim attempted to barricade herself inside a bedroom. Hunter shot through the bedroom door multiple times and gained access to the room.

“The female then retreated to a bathroom that was attached to the bedroom. Again she attempted to barricade herself. This bathroom was also where the three juveniles had taken refuge. Hunter gained access to the bathroom and pointed the handgun at his sister.

“She was able to grab the firearm just as he shot once more. The weapon jammed and the victim was able to talk Hunter into releasing the firearm.”

The adult victim sustained a minor injury to her arm as a result of being in such close proximity to the muzzle of the weapon as it was fired. The three children sustained no physical injuries.

Hunter was arrested and booked into the Iron County Correctional Facility on four counts of aggravated assault, four counts of felony discharge of a firearm and possession of marijuana.
