SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Feb. 29, 2016 (Gephart Daily) — An 18-year-old charged with beating a Riverton teen to death in 2012 appeared in court Monday afternoon to enter a change of plea.

The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday that Darwin Bagshaw, 18, entered a guilty plea to first-degree murder. The change came just a week prior to the start of his schedule 12-day trial.

Bagshaw, who was 14 at the time of the 2012 killing, had been charged in juvenile court with murder and obstructing justice. On Oct. 15, 2014, those charges were dismissed and he was officially charged as an adult.

Anne Kasprzak, 15, was first reported missing from her Riverton home on March 10, 2012. The next day, a woman found a bloody tennis shoe as she was jogging along a trail in Draper, and she alerted police. Shortly after, Kasprzak’s badly beaten body was pulled out of the Jordan River.

An autopsy report indicated the teen had suffered multiple blows to her head, leaving her with a fractured skull and forehead.

Bagshaw, who had been living in Draper at the time of the murder, moved to Colorado soon after being questioned by police. He was attending Grand Junction High School until his arrest in October of 2014.

Bagshaw was being held at a juvenile facility until July of 2015 when he was transferred to the Salt Lake County Jail.

Sentencing is scheduled for April 25, 2016 in front of Judge James T. Blanch in Utah’s Third District Court. The charge carries a sentence of 15 years to life in prison.
