WEST BOUNTIFUL, Utah, March 22, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Crews battled a blaze at a business in West Bountiful on Thursday evening that caused an estimated $100,000 in damages.

South Davis Metro Fire Chief Jeff Bassett said crews responded to reports of a commercial structure fire in a strip mall in the area of 724 W. 500 South just after 9 p.m.

“When our units arrived, they discovered one of the end units was full of smoke and fire,” Bassett said.

“We had some people in the adjoining businesses notice there was a fire, so they came in and tried to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher, and after that extinguisher was used they kept those doors closed until our units could arrive. Just with the amount of wind coming up, they knew that if those doors were opened up it really would have pushed that fire.”

He said firefighters were able to get inside fairly quickly and knock the blaze down.

Bassett said the fire was contained to one room but there are five or six businesses in the strip mall, and crews are going through each business clearing out the smoke and assessing for any damages.

The room in the unit where the fire originated is uninhabitable, Bassett said.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
