The film is a 13-min short about Utah resident Tom Clark who served a Mormon mission in Italy in 1974 where he began a secret love affair with an Italian Communist man. The film will be featured worldwide on The New York Times’ prestigious Op-Docs online showcase soon after. In the fall, it will be posted on Utah’s own documentary showcase, KUER’s VideoWest.

The film was co-produced by the Times and VideoWest, the latter being the brainchild of RadioWest host Doug Fabrizio and producer Elaine Clark.

“After an incredible premiere in New York City at one of the best film festivals in the U.S., we are especially excited to bring the film to Utah for friends, family and the LGBT community back home,” film director Genéa Gaudet, a Salt Lake City resident, said.

The premiere will also feature a second VideoWest documentary, “TransMormon,” by Utah director Torben Bernhard. The 15-min film chronicles the story of Eri Hayward who was born and raised by Mormon parents who supported her sex reassignment surgery. “TransMormon” was a viral hit and Vimeo Staff Pick in 2014, having currently garnered over 1.5 million plays.

The “Elder” premiere will include a panel discussion of experts and film subjects moderated by Fabrizio. The Utah Film Center was the fiscal sponsor for the film.

After its Tribeca premiere, “Elder” was screened at the Newport Beach Film Festival in California. The next festival on the docket is the 2015 Outfest Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival in the Queerer Than Fiction program on Thursday, July 16.

The Broadway is located at 111 E. Broadway, Salt Lake City, and there will be a suggested donation of $5 at the door.
