WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Jan. 29, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A fire at a home in West Valley City early Sunday morning caused $50,000 in damages; but nobody was injured, according to officials.

Five people were inside the home in the area of 3900 S. Bonniewood Drive (3300 West) when the blaze broke out at approximately 5 a.m., said West Valley City Fire Department Battalion Chief Jed Peters.

Peters said a male occupant of the home was asleep on the couch when he heard crackling sounds coming from the rear deck and kitchen area.

The family of five evacuated, and approximately 20 firefighters had the blaze under control in about 10 minutes.

Peters said the fire destroyed the rear deck and the kitchen, which are divided by a sliding glass door. Investigators are trying to determine whether the blaze began inside and spread to the outside or outside and spread to the inside.

The occupants have been displaced and are receiving assistance from family members.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
