WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, April 22, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Firefighters were called to 3400 S. Redwood Road after several storage units caught fire Saturday afternoon.

West Valley City Fire Battalion Chief Jed Peters said the fire started at about 4:20 p.m. and spread to eight storage lockers that are each “a little bigger than a closet.”

Because the units are along a hallway, firefighters had to deal with tight access and had to force entry into the area, Peters said, so it took “a good 20 minutes to get the fire under control.”

Another 10 minutes later, the fire was completely extinguished.

Peters said only eight of the units actually burned, but others sustained some smoke damage.

Asked if there were any flammables in the units, Peters told Gephardt Daily, “There were some small propane tanks, like for camping, in a couple units, but they didn’t catch fire.”

He estimated that damage to the building itself came to about $10,000. Damage to the contents of the units that burned, he said, is probably about $5,000 per unit.

Peters said 25 firefighters responded, but only 15 were actually needed. There were no injuries in connection with this fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
