SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 11, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — In observance of Patriot Day, Sept. 11, Gov. Gary Herbert has authorized the lowering of the U.S. flag and the State of Utah flag.

Flags will be flown at half-staff at all state facilities from sunrise to sunset today.

Gov. Herbert also issued the following statement:

“Sixteen years ago, the dark forces of terror attempted to crush the American spirit in a series of coordinated attacks that took nearly 3,000 innocent lives. But even in the throes of this tragic loss — of fathers, mothers, spouses, loved ones — an even stronger spirit of love, courage, and selfless service emerged as dedicated first responders and ordinary Americans stepped forward to help their fellow men. Their sacrifices and courage strengthened the very spirit our enemies sought to destroy.

“We continue to live in perilous times. We are still fighting the war that began that September. We fight both on foreign soil, and at home. We carry the torch of liberty by choosing to give selfless service, to stand united, and to fearlessly love all our fellow men. On this Patriot Day, let us respect and remember all those we have lost — and all those who still fight. Let us honor their sacrifices by choosing to live with greater dedication to our sacred duties as Americans and as decent human beings.”
