SPRINGDALE, Utah, Feb. 6, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 13-year-old Utah girl has died after apparently falling while hiking in Zion National Park, officials said.

A news release from the National Park Service said girl’s body was discovered by hikers in Refrigerator Canyon along the West Rim Trail just before 5 p.m. Monday. Search and rescue teams have recovered her body. The girl was hiking with family when she fell from the Angels Landing Trail, said Zion park ranger John Marciano.

The girl’s name and home town have not been released.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office will head up the investigation to determine the cause of death, officials said.

“This is an extremely sad event. Our thoughts go out to this visitor’s family,” said Jeff Bradybaugh, Zion National Park Superintendent, in a prepared statement.

The Angels Landing Trail and the West Rim Trail from the Grotto Trailhead to Angels Landing were closed on Tuesday until 1 p.m. due to the ongoing investigation.
