SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah, March 18, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A man and his dog were safely rescued after becoming lost when a storm rolled in over the Butterfield Canyon area on Saturday.

Unified Police Lt. Bill Robertson said the 36-year-old man had left in the afternoon to go hiking with his dog.

As the snow started coming down, the man became disoriented and lost his way.

Robertson said the hiker had a hard time getting reception on his phone, but was able to call someone at about 6 p.m. At that point, it had been about three hours since anyone had heard from him.

Officials were able to “ping” his phone to get his general location, and a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter went up to look for the man.

The DPS helicopter had already located him before Unified Police arrived on scene.

“The helicopter found him about five miles between Yellow Fork and Rose Canyon,” Robertson said.

“The credit goes to DPS for finding him right away. They brought him down, checked him out. He was a little cold, but he was fine.”

Robertson added, “The dog was fine, too. Everybody was OK.”
