HURRICANE, Utah, March 7, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Three people are behind bars after a Hurricane City Police officer stopped their car for speeding Sunday afternoon and discovered nearly $50,000 worth of methamphetamine.

Hurricane City Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said the incident occurred just after 3 p.m. when an officer observed a light blue Dodge Avenger going 20 mph over the speed limit on State Street. The officer initiated a traffic stop.

During the stop, the officer suspected drug use and requested a K-9 named Paige to assist. Once Paige indicated there were drugs in the vehicle, Buell said a search was conducted.

Officers were able to seize 532 grams of methamphetamine as well as cocaine, marijuana, 27 hydrocodone pills and nine Phentermine pills. Officers also discovered a 9mm Beretta handgun, a digital scale, bags used in the distribution of narcotics and several large knives.

Police arrested Joseph Hoyd, 41, of Nevada, as well as Brittany White, 26, and Donnie Bumgarner, 29, both of Montana, on multiple charges including felony drug distribution, possession of a weapon by a restricted person, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of drugs.

Hoyd was also charged with evidence tampering, attempting to hide drugs in the patrol vehicle and for swallowing methamphetamine at the jail. He was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center because of the large amount of methamphetamine ingested.

Buell said the drugs were headed somewhere to be sold, and he is glad officers and K-9 Paige were able to get them off the street.
