KUTV marketing consultant killed in Big Cottonwood Canyon rock climbing accident

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah July, 14, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A 26-year-old rock climber was killed Thursday night after a falling 100 feet in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Matt Hearn, a marketing consultant for KUTV, was rock climbing with his girlfriend in the Storm Mountain area about 8 p.m. when his equipment failed causing him to fall to the rocks below.

Bystanders attempted to render first aid but were unable to save him.

Unified Police investigators say Hearn was not wearing helmet and suffered severe head trauma.

KUTV’s general manager, Kent Crawford released the following statement:

“It is with great sadness that we report the tragic loss of one of our fantastic coworkers, Matt Hearn, in a climbing accident in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Matt has worked as a Marketing Consultant for the last three years and has done an outstanding job on behalf of the station and all of his clients.

“Matt lived life to the fullest and gave 100 percent to everything he did. He had a great zest for life.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and close friends at this difficult time.

“Matt will be sorely missed by all who knew him.”
