Police search for man who fled into Liberty Park after alleged armed carjacking

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Jan. 15, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City police are searching for a suspect who crashed a stolen vehicle near Liberty Park early Sunday afternoon.

A white GMC Envoy crashed into a power pole near 1300 South and 500 East, on the southwest side of Liberty Park, at approximately 10 a.m., according to a news release from the Salt Lake City Police Department.

The incident began when a man started his vehicle at 732 S. 400 East and then walked a short distance away to throw some trash in the nearby dumpster. When the victim turned around he saw a man get into his car. When the victim confronted the suspect the man pointed either a rifle, or shotgun at him which caused victim to back away.

The suspect fled and was later seen by an officer. The vehicle then fled at a high rate of speed without officers pursuing. The vehicle lost control at 1300 S. 500 East and hit a power pole. The suspect fled on foot, but officers were unable to locate him.

Evidence was found inside the Tracy Aviary but a gun was never recovered. The suspect was described as a white male in his mid-20s.
