SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah, July 23, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A motorcyclist was transported by medical helicopter after a single vehicle crash that left him in critical condition.

The crash happened at about noon Saturday, about a quarter mile from the S-turn, said Det. Ken Hansen, Unified Police Department. The cyclist was westbound.

“A rider who was reported going about 70 mph lost control of the motorcycle and hit the mountain after sliding for awhile,” Hansen said.

“I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a motorcycle that’s been in so many parts,” Hansen told Gephardt Daily. “The engine’s in the water; the gas tank is on the other side of the hill. They hit a rock. The whole motorcycle’s just basically been broken into a number of parts.”

The rider was wearing some protection, Hansen said, including a helmet. A larger than average investigative team was called in, he said, due to the size of the debris field.

Due to the investigation, traffic would be limited to one lane of traffic until late afternoon, Hansen said.

“It’s going to take some expertise to do a reconstuct on this accident,” he said. “You can determine the rider lost control, then you need to determine speed.”
