WEST BOUNTIFUL, Utah, April 25, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Court papers reveal more details about an accident this week in which police say a drunken driver’s car rammed the corner of a house, sending a baby flying from her crib in the bedroom inside.

The driver, identified by police as 25-year-old Stephan Alanzo Briones, has been charged with:

  • Criminal mischief, a second-degree felony
  • Driving under the influence with physical injury, a class A misdemeanor
  • Carrying a dangerous weapon while under the influence of alcohol/drugs, a class B misdemeanor
  • Reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor

The crash was reported at 2:14 a.m. Sunday near 1800 W. 400 South, West Bountiful.

“According to dispatch information, an infant was sleeping in a crib located at the location of the impact,” the probable cause statement says. The 5-month-old girl was thrown from her crib by the impact, and propelled an estimated 20 feet, according to a news release.

Medical crews evaluated the baby and transported her to Primary Children’s Hospital. Later, another officer reported back after talking to the attending physician.

“The physician indicated that the injury was not severe, but that the infant may have suffered a mild concussion,” the probable cause statement says.

A North Salt Lake Police officer reported seeing Briones’ car traveling at 100 mph on Redwood Road.

An officer caught up with the car after Briones had crashed into the house.

“Mr. Briones had already exited his vehicle and proned himself on the ground as he (the officer) arrived on the scene, at which time Mr. Briones was taken into custody.”

Briones reportedly told the arresting officer that he had been drinking, the statement says, but later stopped talking about it. Briones also told officers that he owned a firearm that was in the car. It was taken into evidence.

Briones was also found to have an outstanding warrant for his arrest from Lindon Justice Court.

Several unopened containers of Blue Moon beer were found on the floor of the car.

Briones was given a portable blood-alcohol test, which showed a level at 0.198, more than twice the legal limit. The probable cause statement also indicates that Briones failed field sobriety tests based on his ability to balance.

Damage to the residence was estimated at $45,000 to $50,000.
