SANDY, Utah, March 13, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 30-year-old suspect has died after an officer-involved shooting in Sandy Tuesday afternoon.

Sandy Police Department Lt. Dean Carriger told Gephardt Daily shortly before 5 p.m. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents were involved in the shooting in the area of 180 E. 8960 South.

“The ATF task force, which is comprised of ATF agents and local law enforcement agents, were tracking an individual to serve a federal arrest warrant,” Carriger said. “They tracked that individual to this location, he was mobile in a vehicle at the time they contacted him. When contact was made they saw some actions of the suspect, shots were fired by the officers that served that warrant, and the suspect was struck by rounds from the officers.”

The suspect was transported to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, where he later died.

There were multiple people in the suspect vehicle but the only person that was struck was the suspect, Carriger said.

It does not appear that any officers were injured as a result of the incident.

The other people in the vehicle will be interviewed, he added.

The Unified Police Department will be investigating the incident pursuant to Salt Lake County OICI Protocol. The investigation is ongoing.

He added that it’s too early at this time to say what the sequence of events was that prompted the officers to open fire but that information will be forthcoming.

“These are often complex investigations and the only information I have is that officers discharged their weapons and the suspect was struck,” Carriger added.

It’s not known what the warrant was being served for.

Drivers are being urged to avoid the area.

Gephardt Daily will update this developing story as information becomes available.
