Officials rescue injured hiker stuck on cliff near Cedar City

IRON COUNTY, Utah, Feb. 23, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Police rescued an injured hiker from a cliff in Iron County Wednesday evening.

The Iron County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release deputies were dispatched at about 5:20 p.m. to the injured hiker, who was stuck on a cliff above the Thunderbird Gardens Trail near Cedar City.

Deputies arrived on scene and located a friend of the hiker at the base of the cliffs, the news release said.

The hiker, Kennedy Hunt, 19, is a college student from Nevada. She was injured while climbing up the cliffs with another friend when a large rock fell and hit her in the knee. She was then unable to get back down the cliff.

Deputies were able to locate Hunt a significant distance up the cliff face from the base. Iron County Sheriff’s Ropes Rescue and Search and Rescue teams were called out, as was Gold Cross EMS services.

“Rescue units had to trek approximately two miles up extremely rugged terrain to get to Hunt,” the news release said. “Despite the onset of a snow storm, the combined efforts of members of all of these groups contributed to a successful rescue operation and they were able to get Hunt off the side of the cliff.”

Hunt was treated on scene by Gold Cross EMS and did not need further medical attention.
