Orem Police arrest knife wielding assailant

OREM, Utah, March 7, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Orem Police arrested a man Tuesday night who laid down in the road at the mouth of Provo Canyon, tried to jump in front of traffic, pulled a knife on an officer, told the officer to shoot him, and then climbed onto the roof of a building.

The incident began at the mouth of the canyon at approximately 11 p.m., and police immediately tweeted that drivers should avoid the area.

A subsequent news release said police received a report of a man who was lying in the road and jumping in front of traffic at the mouth of the canyon.

“When we found him, he pulled a knife on our officer and told him to shoot him,” the news release said. “The man took off and ran into the Olmstead Power Plant, jumped on to the roof of a building and refused to come down.”

Officers were able to use a bean bag round on the man, which is a baton round fired as a shotgun shell used for less lethal apprehension of suspects.

Officers were able to take the man into custody, while still on the roof. He was taken first to a local hospital to be checked out and then to jail.

The man has not been identified.

No one was injured in the course of the incident.
