Police identify suspect arrested after car critically injures bicyclist in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 16, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Police have identified the suspect arrested after an early morning collision between an SUV and a bicyclist, which left the cyclist in critical condition.

Salt Lake City Police officers booked Jason Kaze, 44, into jail for DUI, hit and run and other related traffic offenses. Shawn Coller, 43, who was a passenger in Kaze’s vehicle, was booked for obstruction of justice.

The bicyclist, a 56-year-old male, was transported to a local hospital in critical but stable condition, and underwent emergency surgery.

The accident happened about 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of 1700 South and 900 West.

Police told Gephardt Daily the bicyclist was heading westbound through the intersection on 1700 South when the impaired driver of a Ford Bronco ran the red light and the hit the bike broadside.

Police say the suspect from the Bronco ran from the vehicle after the crash and had to be chased down.

Kaze was taken into custody and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
