WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, April 6, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 19-year-old West Valley City man has been booked for robbery after police say he went to the house of an acquaintance and stole a firearm.

The incident happened at 2:45 p.m. Thursday at a residence at 5952 Fox River Road, West Valley City.

“It initially came in as a home invasion, but it was more of a burglary in progress,” said Sgt. Scott Arnold, WVCPD. “Basically, the resident wasn’t at home, but his girlfriend responded to the address to pick up some property for him.

“While she was there, she encountered an individual that was inside the home, burglarizing the home, and that individual pointed a firearm at her and told her not to call police, and fled the scene.”

The man’s face was partially covered, but the homeowner and the girlfriend thought they might know the identity of the thief.

“Our officers were able to track that suspect down, talk to him on the phone, and he admitted to being the suspect,” Arnold said. “He returned to the scene, turned himself in and returned the property taken.”

The property was the gun used to threaten the resident’s girlfriend.

“He wasn’t expecting anyone to be there,” Arnold said. “He went there, we believe, with the intention to steal that specific firearm.”

The suspect, identified as Alex Michael Buffi, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail system on burglary and robbery charges, Arnold said. No one was injured in the incident.
