PROVO, Utah, July 7, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A 26-year-old man from Orem is dead after a crash in Provo Canyon on Thursday evening.

The incident happened just before 7:50 p.m. on State Route 189 at milepost 10 near Bridal Veil Falls, according to a news release from the Utah Highway Patrol.

A gold 1995 Nissan Altima was westbound on SR-189, the news release said. The driver of the Nissan, Jared Kidrick, attempted to pass traffic on the right shoulder and lost control.

The Nissan Altima crossed both westbound lanes and struck the cable median barrier. A white Hyundai Santa Fe was eastbound on SR-189 in the left lane. When the Nissan struck the cable barrier, the barrier stretched and the Nissan struck the Hyundai.

Kidrick was pronounced dead on scene. The condition of the occupants of the Hyundai has not yet been confirmed by officials.

The UHP is looking at speed and improper passing as a factor in the fatal crash.
