PROVO, Utah, Nov. 26, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Provo Police are investigating an aggravated assault that occurred in a Provo park in the early hours of Sunday.

The incident happened at Exchange Park, at 700 W. 900 North, at approximately 2:25 a.m., Lt. Brian Taylor, Provo Police Department, told Gephardt Daily.

A witness called police to report an altercation in the pavilion area, Taylor said.

Michael Hanson, 39, who was sleeping in the park, was found unconscious with stab wounds to the head and face.

Hanson suffered “serious lacerations” to his face, Taylor said, and was transported to Utah Valley Hospital in serious condition.

He added that because of the nature of the injuries and how violent the attack was, police believe the incident may not be random, and Hanson may have been targeted for an unknown reason.

Taylor said detectives have just completed processing the crime scene in search of evidence.

Officials have not yet been able to interview Hanson, so there is no description of the suspect.

Police are asking anyone who has any information about the attack to call Detective Robert Payne at 801-852-7280, or the detective division on 801-852-6255.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
