Update: Motorcyclist killed in Salt Lake City crash identified

Early this morning, a motorcycle carrying two, was struck at the intersection of 1700 South and 900 West. The driver of the motorcycle was killed, his female passenger was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, June 20, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A motorcyclist killed in an accident at 1700 S. 900 West Tuesday morning has been identified.

Johnathan Burgess, 32, of Sandy, died at the scene, said the Salt Lake City Police Department in a Twitter post Tuesday evening.

The crash between a motorcycle and an SUV occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m., Salt Lake City Police Department spokesman Det. Greg Wilking told Gephardt Daily.

“A motorcycle travelling southbound on 900 West was struck by a vehicle travelling eastbound on 1700 South,” Wilking said. “The driver of the motorcycle died on scene, his female passenger was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.”

Wilking said early indications are that both people on the motorcycle were wearing helmets. He said there may have been a red light violation on somebody’s part, but police aren’t sure who at this point. He added police do have video from the surrounding businesses. Wilking said it does not appear that drugs or alcohol were a contributing factor at this early stage.

The intersection was closed for several hours while a Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) investigated.

“We have a lot of these kind of accidents on very nice days, clear days, no weather conditions, it’s people who are often distracted, they aren’t as aware because it’s not a stressful driving condition and that’s when we have these kind of accidents,” Wilking said. “We’re reminding people to drive aware all the time. Whether you’re in a car or on a motorcycle, pay attention to the people around you. Be aware and be watching and listening.”

  3. Sorry for the misspelling on some of the words. Its been a rough few days and spelling is the least of my worries. However the few words are… prayers, short , something and again. I do apologize. Respectfully Teresa B.

  4. He was one of the best men I’ve ever met. There is a reminder at the crash sight for people to remember to pay attention to the motorcyclists. We just attended his funeral and it was the most heart breaking thing seeing him not even look like himself after such a horrible accident!
