SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 21, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 20-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning after he fired shots at two people outside the Grand America Hotel, then hid in his room, where a handgun and cocaine were later found by police.

Miguel Prado, 20, was booked into Salt Lake County Jail for second-degree felony aggravated assault, third-degree felony illegal discharge of a firearm, and class A misdemeanor drug possession, according to a probable cause statement issued by Salt Lake City Police Department.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:10 a.m. outside the hotel at 555 S. Main St., the probable cause statement said.

The statement says the suspect was involved in an altercation with two men who were walking down the street.

“The a/p produced a handgun and fired shots at the victims as they were running away,” the statement said. “A bullet impacted a window of an occupied hotel room in Little America across the street,” the statement goes on.

“Grand America staff entered the a/p’s hotel room where they found the a/p hiding under a mattress.”

Police were notified and entered to do a protective sweep of the room.

“A handgun and a baggie with a white powder substance were laying in plain view,” the probable cause statement says. “Post Miranda, the a/p admitted to touching the gun and that there was a bag of cocaine laying on the floor.”

Detectives wrote a warrant to seize the handgun and cocaine from the room.

Nobody was injured in the course of the incident.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is made available.
