SANDY, Utah, Oct. 22, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Sandy Police are investigating after a 3-year-old boy was shot in the arm at a party in Sandy Saturday night.

Officials were called to the incident at East Village Apartments, 122 E. Sego Lily Drive, which occurred at approximately 9:45 p.m., Sandy Police Department Sgt. Jason Nielsen told Gephardt Daily.

Nielsen said a party was being held and a man was handling a 9mm handgun, and thought it was unloaded. He discharged it by mistake, striking the toddler in the arm.

The little boy’s 28-year-old father was also grazed in the leg by the bullet, Nielsen said.

Both the injured parties were taken by ground ambulance to an area hospital. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Nielsen said the incident will be investigated; it’s not clear at this time whether the man who discharged the handgun will be facing any charges.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
