See it here: Ogden house a total loss after Sunday fire

OGDEN, Utah, Sept. 11, 2016 (Gephart Daily) — An older home in Ogden is a total loss after fire struck Sunday night.

The building, near 17th Street and Ogden Avenue, was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived shortly after receiving several 911 calls about the blaze.

Ogden Fire Department Battalion Chief Hal VanMeeteren said the first call came in at 7:45 p.m. There were reports of people being inside the building, he said, but everyone was out when firefighters got there. The Red Cross is helping those who were displaced by the fire.

VanMeeteren said the fire was under control within about 30 minutes, but the intensity of the heat burned away the gas meter on the building, and Questar had to be called out to shut off the gas line on the property. To get to the line, Questar had to dig up part of the street, so it took about an hour and a half to get the gas completely turned off, VanMeeteren said.

Firefighters were still on scene past 11 p.m., spraying water on the roof and checking for hot spots.

The value of the home wasn’t immediately known, but VanMeeteren said the building is a total loss. Fortunately, there were no injuries.

VanMeeteren said there was a lot of debris around and in the building, and investigators were going over the scene late Sunday night, working to determine the exact cause of the fire.
