A Dash Of Pepper In Salt Lake

Salt Lake City local Jann Haworth is best known as the co-creator of an amazing album that she and her then husband, Sir Peter Blake created. The album is called ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,’ it is The Beatles 1967 album and the cover is iconic.

The album spent 22 weeks at the top of the album charts in the United Kingdom in addition to 15 weeks as number one on the United States pop chart. It also won four Grammys in 1968.

Almost 50 years after the album became a top hit Haworth created a mural which is very similar to the album cover and is located in downtown Salt Lake City on 253 So. And 400 W. The mural is a version of the album cover with people she describes as “catalysts of art and social changes included.” She started the mural in 2004 and completed the first stage of the mural, with help from 33 other artists that all vary in ages, in 2005.

The mural stands at 50 ft tall by 30 ft wide. While she is impressed with how far the album cover has come, she is more proud of the mural she painted downtown. She is hoping to have similar murals in Los Angeles and Barcelona.

Some differences between the album cover and this mural is that she changed the faces of the mural to have an ethics and gender balance.

There are two more stages that she is going to be bringing to this mural and those are:

  • Keeping the Beatles cut-out silhouettes and this will allow the public to pose and photograph themselves.
  • Have the piece enhanced with a sound system and lighting designs.

Haworth has been the Lab Manager for The Leonardo for three years. The Leonardo is a technology and art Museum on Library Square in downtown Salt Lake City.
